Located approximately sixty kilometres northeast from Paphos, in the region of Tillyria, you will discover Pomos Village and dam. Pomos Dam is located in the Paphos Area of the Country of Cyprus. The Dam is located at the latitude and longitude coordinates of 35.140556 and 32.578611 and is a rock filled embankment dam. It has a capacity of 860.000 m3. It was constructed in the 1960s and came into operation in1966. Designed by Energoproject of Yugoslavia the dam was constructed by Mediterranean Constructors-G.P. Zachariades, Greece - Cyprus. The dam is particularly popular with anglers who visit the area all year round to enjoy their fishing excursions.
The village is located by the sea, at an altitude of ten metres, If you travel just half a kilometer inland the altitude becomes elevated to 670 metres, in the area of Lorovounos.The village has had the name Pomos since the medieval period, on the olden templar maps, it is marked as 'Pomo'. Alhough considering its Greek origin, it is likely that the legitimate name was always Pomos, possibly from the Greek 'vomos', meaning altar. It is widely believed that the village at some time probably hosted a sanctuary or an altar of a certain deity.
The idol of Pomos is a celebrated prehistoric sculpture discovered at the Cypriot village of Pomos. It dates all the way back to the Chalcolithic period, circa the 30th century BC. That would make it around 5000 years old. The sculpture represents a woman with her arms spread. It is believed by historians to have probably been used as a fertility symbol. Large numbers of this kind of sculptures have been found around Cyprus. Smaller versions of this symbol were worn as amulets around the neck. The idol of Pomos is a very well known and celebrated item in Cypriot culture and has even been included as a part of the design on it's one and two Euro currency coins. Nowadays, the idol of Pomos it is on display in the Cyprus Archeological Museum in Nicosia.
Not too far from the edge of the village, there is an archeological site, dating back to pre-historic times that has been recently excavated. Evidence shows that the area of Pomos was definitely occupied during this period, though no major findings have been noted, thus the area is not presumed to have been too important, in comparison to other excavated sites around Cyprus.The history of the village also includes the arrival of Saint Helen on the island in the year 14 A.D. The evidence for this are archeological findings of a settlement north of Pomos, a settlement that was marked on old maps as 'Ayia Eleni' or Saint Helen, the settlement was mentioned during the Byzantine and Frankish period of rule and has many excavated findings on site, confirming this theory.
The Virgin Mary was and still is greatly worshiped in the village of Pomos. Pomos has a monastery named Panagia Chrysopateritissa just north of the village. The Monastery is located about five kilometers northwest of Pomos. It is built in a wooded area, close to the dam of Pomos. The beaautiful nature around this small church awaken visitors with a sense of serenity.. There are two versions of the name Chrysopatritissa. One refers to the existence in the monastery of many fathers of the church, while the second version refers to an abbot and hagiographer of the monastery named Thomas, who apparently always held a golden crutch (rod) and when he painted the icon of the Virgin Mary gave it the name Chrysopatritissa. There is also an opinion that the monastery was given its name before it was built and not after it was built. The Monastery of Our Lady of Chrysopateritissa was built in 1520 and today only its homonymous church, which has been renovated in recent years, survives.
Pomos has an average yearly rainfall of about 440cm and the area is known for the produce of various citrus fruit, almond trees, avocados, bananas, walnut trees, olive trees and other domestic vegetation.The village is surrounded by thick vegetation of pine trees and thyme, with its south part, falling into the Paphos Forest region. With a good yield of various produce in the village, it has been included in the irrigation project of Chrysochous, that it has greatly benefited from. The project has notably assisted the villages fishing development.Visitors to Pomos will usually comment on the astounding natural beauty of its landscape richly abundant with its lushious green agriculture.
Unlike many other villages in Cyprus, Pomos has met a continuous increase in its population, with merely 180 residents in 1881, jumping to 540 residents in 1981, with the last inventory showing a slower increase, climbing to 600 residents today. The slow lazy lifestyle in Pomos and minimal employment opportunity results in the village being populated mainly by its local residents whose families have ancestral links to the area.
Pomos village has many great attractions in it's area. Apart from the stunningly beautiful scenery of the place, with pine trees running down, through the steep mountain ridges, that tower over the blue Mediterranean Sea and the traditional architecture of the village. Apart from the wonderful atmosphere of the place, made by such a unique compilation of natural and man-made environment, there are also some very special places, one can visit while he's in the area.One such attraction is the magnificently beautiful rocky cove, located a few kilometres off the centre of the village, known as the Dragon's Cave. The cave is linked to the legend of the Dragon who apparently once inhabited a large cove, protecting locals from the many raids on the island.
Located in the area of Tyllria, about two kilometres north of the Pomos village the cape of Pomos can be found. It's formation took place due to the surrounding hard rock which resisted the mordant energy of the waves. The walk from the nearby village of Nea Dimmata over to the cape, is one of the most picturesque offshore routes on the island.
